Zaza leaned forward on tiptoes & whispered to the barista. He cocked his head, then gave her a grin & winked.
"What did you order?" David asked.
"You'll see!"
"One David Special!" the barista called. Zaza ran to claim her latte with a #foam art drawing of David on top.

The captors tried to eat what Momo had cooked over the fire.
"Ugh!" said the leader. "This is awful! The eggs are burned & full of shells. Haven't you ever cooked before?"
Then he looked at Momo & Revin could see wheels turning as the #enormity of the question sank home.

"What?"
"Are you just going to sit there?"
"What do you want me to do?"
"Come make it up to me!" she said, stamping her foot.
"How can I do that?"
"You can start by giving me a hug."
"And then?"
"Well, we'll just see what happens then…" she purred.

Wearing his field attire, #Words lowered himself from a window. He turned & found the Baron standing just behind him.
"Going somewhere, Your Majesty?" the Baron asked.
"I was… I was just…"
"Please don't make me call the guards."
Defeated, Words returned to his duties.

#Awake in the pre-dawn hours, Revin wiggled his fingers to try to aid blood circulation. But then he realized Momo had rolled up against him and was keeping his hands warm. She stirred when he moved, then relaxed back into sleep. In spite of everything, Revin smiled.

When David returned, the Better Angels were running around in circles hissing at one another.
"What's up?" David asked.
"That man said we were #seraphim," Zaza explained.
"I think he just meant 'angels,' not serpents."
"Yesss! But we want to be sssnakesss!" Zaza hissed.

My sister's door was ajar when I stumbled out of my bedroom at two in the morning. I went into the bathroom, relieved myself, washed my hands, & headed back to bed. I glanced at her door & noticed an #eye peering at me through the crack. An inhuman eye. Then it blinked.

Aimee and Velurri circulated among the demons & their human familiars. Some were terrified, some seemed already inured, while others were strangely unconcerned.
"#Nobody could be that unconcerned with what's happening," she said.
"They're being puppeted," Rory said.

Aimee & Velurri stood outside the great double doors that led into the Grand Hall. Huge troll-like creatures opened the doors & they stepped through to a scene out of #nightmare. Hundreds of demons were in attendance—and they all had human familiars. Many were children.

David checked an item off his to-do list: scheduling, arranging, filling out forms, negotiating… Some days it was #endless. Then Zaza ran in.
"David!"
"What?"
"I just wanted to say thanks!" she said, patting him on his arm.
David smiled. Some days it was all worthwhile.
